8 -- History of Christian Education and Formation

So far we have focused on the philosophy of education. What exactly do we want people under our care to learn and how to organize ourselves to lead them? And we will get back to that but at this point I'd like us to pause and take stock of the history of Christian education and formation. Why do we have Sunday School? How did we decide that small groups were effective tools for helping people grow in their faith? When did we shift toward a more holistic view spiritual formation and why?

Watch a brief interview with Drs James Houston and Bruce Hindmarsh. Be prepared to explain their perspectives on the history of the formation movement.

Read pp 18-111 of Bill Hull's book The Complete Book of Discipleship. Be prepared to explain the evolution of discipleship over the years. How are Christian education and spiritual formation related to discipleship? What in Hull's writing jumps out at you as being really important? Why?

I am not expecting a write-up of this assignment but I am looking forward to having an informed conversation with you by video chat.
